When people move they often come across a lot of things they don’t really use anymore – like that prom dress for example. If this ever happens to you, think about donating it to a young woman that might like to go to prom but could never afford a proper dress. That is where Abby’s Closet comes in. They collect formal dresses and gowns and give them to worthy young women so they can attend prom and other meaningful events.

When we heard about what they were doing in our community we wanted to get involved. We are now the official transportation to many beautiful gowns and dresses that are getting a new life, building confidence and respect for some important young women.

Mission Statement
To inspire confidence and respect in high school women by providing free formal gowns for prom and other memorable events.

It Started with a Pink Prom Dress. When Abby Egland of West Linn, Oregon was cleaning out her closet before starting college, she wondered how she could best pass along the pretty pink dress that she had worn to her Prom. Her mom, Sally Egland, had a great idea: why not start a volunteer group that collects formal dresses, and then give them away each spring to high school women who needed them for their prom? This was the start of Abby’s Closet in 2004.

The Prom Gown Giveaway. Abby and Sally asked some of their co-workers and friends to help collect the dresses from high schools, other moms, businesses and those who heard about Abby’s Closet through the local media. The first year over 300 high school women came to the prom gown giveaway in April and almost all left with a beautiful dress that they picked out from the hundreds collected by the volunteers. Most had not been able to afford to buy the expensive gowns in stores, so they were very happy to be able to go to prom in a beautiful dress after all, thanks to Abby’s Closet. The Prom Gown Giveaway Events have grown each year. To date, Abby’s Closet has given away over 5,000 prom gowns.

The Word Spreads. The first year, most of the young women who received gowns came from the Portland, Oregon area, but soon high school women who lived further away heard about the giveaway. Students from small towns convinced their mothers to carpool a group to Portland, often arriving as early as 4:30 am to get a good place in line for the 8 am opening. Some students found business sponsors in their towns to pay for a school bus to bring the girls to the gown giveaway event. This year the Board members of Abby’s Closet have called all high schools, public and private, within 150 miles of the gown giveaway event, to be sure they know that their students are welcome to come select a free prom gown from the 4,500+ that have been collected.

We have learned that when you say you “can move almost anything anywhere” people will test you. That’s OK because we love a good challenge.

We moved a GIANT Buddha from a restaurant to a yoga studio in Portland’s Pearl District using a flatbed trailer. We used 11 crew members for this move as well as a scissor-lift which we used to place the Buddha on top of the platform. After a visit to the yoga studio we took the Buddha to one of our storage facilities for a six year savasana. Recently we moved him again to the owners back yard in Walla Walla, WA where he sits in beautiful tranquility today.

Master Movers is a trusted art transporter. We have moved priceless pieces of art around the world including one of the only existing copies of Michelangelo’s Pietà sculpture.

If you need help coordinating the move of a piece of sculpture or other heavy delicate works of art please give us a call. Use our free estimate form to give us as many details as you can and we will get right back to you.

To Brent Barnes Sales Coordinator with Master Movers Moving & Storage

“Last week I was in charge of moving two households into one. This was a task I was dreading, one move is tough enough but agreeing to oversee my partners move made the upcoming week feel overwhelming.

From start to finish – you and your patience in explaining how Oregon law works with moving companies to your customer service follow up and your movers were amazing!

I was shocked at how easy you made my moves. Nate was involved in both moves, Michael was with him for the first move, and Tony and a third young quite man (I apologize for not remembering his name) were with Nate for the second move.

These men were amazing, not only were they careful but they were friendly and it felt as if I was moving with friends instead of hiring a company. I was expecting a slow pace since in OR your pricing is regulated and is done hourly. Other people had told me stories from other moving companies that “milked” the move to get more time billed. Not true at all, with your movers. Every one of these guys moved quickly, and efficiently.

The moves were not easy – a king size bed, a piano, and a lot of boxes up and down stairs, there were no complaints, no slowing down, not one thing broken, and not one scratch or damage done to the homes. I was amazed to say the least.

I will highly recommend your company ad your movers to everyone I know that is moving. You truly took a large task and made it and enjoyable part of purchasing a new home for my partner and myself.

Please pass on this praise to the movers that worked for me on my moves, both Tuesday February 12th, and Thursday February 14th. I can not say enough wonderful things about these hard working, friendly, courteous and amazing men.

Please also feel free to use this letter as a letter of recommendation for anyone seeking a moving service.“

Beth V.
